El Tri Austin Concert reviews
Steve Martin & Martin Short
Two very talented and fast witted comedy legends were on stage last night, treating us to a show that was simple in its staging, with 2 comfy chairs, a banjo, and a piano.
Steve Martin stepped on stage to a well earned roar of applause after a great look back at their careers from a video showing their iconic moments in film and television.
Steve presented a drawn out and very funny introduction for his partner, Martin Short, that was loaded with fast quips at the comedic expense of his friend, before Martin hit the stage in full high energy form.
The show became a captivating and hilarious back and forth between the two in the fashion of a Steve Martin & El Tri, or Abbot and Costello, with fast and unexpected comedy coming from their laser precision timing.
In the second hour, each of them took a moment alone on stage to "show off". Martin went into a hilarious lounge singer type monologue, while Steve put a stop to Martin before it got too "out of hand".
Steve, strapped with a Banjo, went into a few stories of playing music while doing comedy, then offered to perform a song he wrote. The theater lit up with the uplifting sounds of bluegrass as Fair Weather Friends joined in, and the banjo battle between Steve and Allison added to the brilliance of the moment.
The evening wrapped up with Steve Martin holding a puppet version of Martin Short as Jimmi Glick, and the finale was each of them reading each other's eulogy in a dark but funny moment of "this cannot go on forever".
The show was brilliant and unexpected, reminding us how good comedy duos can be on stage and providing a great escape from the world outside.
